The Yellow Crowned Amazon is a very popular parrot in homes today. Their popularity is largely due to their affection of people and how easily they respond to training. These birds are quite intelligent therefore easy to tame and train. They will quickly begin to mimic sounds and become a very good talker. Of course there is never a guarantee your pet bird will talk, however I don't know a pet Yellow-Crowned Amazon that hasn't spoken. Being very social, they enjoy companionship and become fast friends with their owner.

Yellow Crowned Amazons (Amazona ochrocephala ochrocephala) are an attractive parrot averaging 14 inches (36cm) in length with a wingspan of eight to eight and a half inches (198 - 220 mm). Like most Amazons, their plumage is largely green with bright red wing edging. The underside of the tail is a yellow-green with a red spot at the base of each tail feather. The beak is a dark gray color and the base and a portion of the upper mandible is a pink color. The eyes are marked by orange irises. Young Yellow Crowns exhibit the same colors as the mature adults, but it is typically more muted and the yellow is not as developed. They also have dark irises. Males and Females exhibit no noticeable differences therefore DNA sexing will be necessary to determine the sex.

Housing

Amazons do best in cages large enough to encourage play and exercise. Your pet should be able to fully stretch its wings without touching the sides of the cage (and still have plenty of room to spare). In addition, the more toys placed in the cage, the larger the cage needs to be. When the cage is completely furnished, your pet should be able to move around freely without banging into the cage, swing, and toys. The bars should be 1 inch apart and strong enough to withstand the strength of the bird.

Toys

The love of chewing can lead to destructive behavior if he is not given plenty of toys suitable for chewing. The Yellow Crown is no exception, therefore it is important to provide plenty of toys to satisfy the need. After all gnawing on your new kitchen cabinets would be considered an undesirable behaviour…wouldn't you agree?

Diet

Yellow Crowned Amazons are no different than other Amazons in that they all require a good diet consisting of your basic parrot feed mix, pelleted formulas and various fruits and vegetables…"The Balanced Approach" You should try and provide a variety of fruits such as apples, pears, plums, cherries, grapes, oranges, bananas, mangos, papayas, and berries such as strawberries and blueberries. Vegetables should include carrots, cucumbers, zucchini, many garden vegetables, and even dandelions and chickweed. Amazons are susceptible to vitamin A deficiency so high foods like dark green leafy veggies, carrots, mangos and sweet potatoes will help insure they get the extra vitamins necessary. Additional proteins can be offered about every two weeks such as cottage cheese, hardboiled eggs or chicken wings.
