The Severe Macaw is the largest of the mini Macaws. You get all the excitement of large Macaw but in a smaller package. Severe Macaw's are exceptionally social parrots that form deep bonds with their owners. They are an outgoing parrot that will spend countless hours climbing, exploring, and just hanging around upside down. When not on the go you'll enjoy their affection as they enjoy being cuddled. Of course most Severe Macaws have a desire to mimic speech.

Severe Macaws (Ara severa) are found in northern South America - Venezuela, Guyana, Brazil, and French Guiana, eastern Panama, Colombia, eastern Peru, and northern Bolivia. Severe Macaw's are also known as Chestnut-Fronted Macaw. They will grow from 16 to 20 inches and weigh from 360 to 410 grams. The crown of the head is tinted blue with a chestnut colour line of feathers bordering the lower part of the cheeks. The bend of the wing and under-converts are scarlet. The tail feathers are reddish-brown with blue on the tips, with the underside being a pinkish red. The facial area is a yellowish white with small dotted lines of tiny black feathers.

Toys

All Macaws are playful and love to chew. Therefore toys are an important part of their daily activity. Branches (from non-toxic trees) and plenty of wooden blocks should do the trick.

Diet

Macaws are active and have a higher than average need for protein. A balanced approach is the best method for your Severe Macaw. Include fresh fruits and vegetables, beans, seeds, pellets, rice, pasta, nuts and protein by way of chicken, eggs, and beef. Seed mixes should only comprise about 25% of their total diet.

Housing

When purchasing a cage, keep in mind a Severe's active and curious nature. Your parrot companion will need enough space for plenty of toys and possibly a swing. We would recommend the biggest you can possibly afford or at least 30" x 24" x 54". A play gym is always recommended for when you parrot is playing outside of the cage.

Grooming

Severe Macaws are from the humid wet climate so daily showers are recommended. Do remember to shower only when temperatures are above 70 degrees. Keep your parrots away from any drafts after showering and allow ample time to groom before bed time. . Birds kept in homes that are dry may have itchiness and poor feather quality. Humidity levels should be between 40 - 50%.
